Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy

Dr. Harriman specializes in child and family intervention. The ultimate goal of treatment is for your child to function effectively in his or her environment. Children come to treatment for a variety of reasons, including stress, behavior problems, traumatic exposure, and a variety of worries and concerns. No matter your reason, Dr. Harriman will work with you closely to determine the nature of your child's problem and make recommendations for appropriate treatment gains. Your expertise on your child is extremely valuable to the treatment process and your participation is paramount. Dr. Harriman will collaboratively develop appropriate treatment plans for your child and family.

Treatment with children primarily involves play therapy interventions; after all play is the child's tool for communication, learning about the world, and problem solving. For older children, traditional "talk therapy" methods are utilized. But perhaps most importantly, Dr. Harriman believes that treating a child or adolescent is most effective when the family actively participates in treatment. Depending on the nature of the problem, this may mean family members occasionally join the session or that every session includes the entire family. Family members can include traditional (parents, siblings) and non-traditional members (nannies, grandparents), as children today often have a wide range of caregivers in their daily lives.

Treatment interventions may also include direct contact and coordination with your child's school or care providers to maximize treatment benefits. Should your child require academic supports, Dr. Harriman can help you navigate the school system and advocate for an Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
